MatheConnect: Students as Citizen Scientist to (re)-design math education

Interdisciplinary competencies are a key focus of Austria’s national curricula and international educational initiatives. However, integrating socially relevant topics into mathematics education remains a challenge. The MatheConnect project takes a unique approach by involving us—students from BG|BRG St. Martin in Villach—not just as learners but as active Citizen Scientists throughout the entire research process.
From the very beginning, we contributed to designing the study, developing data collection instruments, conducting surveys and interviews, and analyzing the results. Our role extended beyond participation—we played a central part in shaping the research, ensuring that student perspectives are directly reflected in the project’s outcomes. Through this hands-on involvement, we gained valuable experience in research methodologies, interdisciplinary thinking, and the real-world application of mathematics. This poster illustrates our journey as co-researchers and the impact of student-led inquiry in (mathematics) education. By sharing our experiences, we aim to provide insights into the benefits and challenges of student involvement in educational research.
