A Matter Of Taste_Investigating Our Genome
Genetic Influence on Taste Perception
Taste perception is often thought to be subjective, but genetics play a key role in shaping how we experience flavors. Our research investigates the genetic basis of taste by analyzing variations in the TAS2R38 gene, which affects the ability to detect bitter compounds like phenylthiocarbamide (PTC).
Using molecular biology techniques—including DNA extraction, PCR, restriction enzyme digestion, and gel electrophoresis—we determine participants' genotypes and correlate them with their ability to taste PTC. This study provides insight into the connection between genotype and phenotype, highlighting the role of genetics in sensory perception, dietary preferences, and nutrition.
